FAQ
Automotive paint, as its name suggests, is used to paint cars, both for protection and decoration.
It can be found on the market formulated at the time of purchase, using a tinting system. Skylack’s SKYMIX, for example, has more than 10,000 color formulas for domestic and imported cars, with extreme color fidelity.
There are basically four types of automotive paints: polyester-based paints, polyurethane enamel, synthetic enamel, and nitrocellulose lacquer. The latter two are rarely used today for automotive refinishing.
Polyester paints are ideal for brightly colored paints, such as car and motorcycle modeling, and must be applied with varnish to be weather-resistant. Polyurethane enamel is easy to apply and has excellent weather resistance. They are generally available in solid colors.
Synthetic enamel paints are the most commonly used today for painting car bodies and agricultural implements and are fast-drying and have a high gloss. Nitrocellulose lacquer is currently used for lacquering furniture.
To adhere the paint to plastic, it is important to use so-called “adhesion enhancers,” such as Skylack® plastic sealant.
The dilution of the paint depends on its technology and may vary depending on the manufacturer that developed it.
It’s best to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, checking the information on the packaging or in the product’s Technical Data Sheet. Also, always use the thinner indicated by the paint manufacturer, as the products were developed to ensure the quality of the work.
For Skylack, all technical data sheets are available on the website www.skylack.com.br.
To choose the best automotive paint brand, you should consider your needs and the cost-effectiveness of each brand.
Skylack Tintas e Barnizes, for example, has been developing its products to meet the needs of its increasingly demanding customers, who are concerned about the quality of its services, since 2005.

Automotive Clearcoat is a product designed to ensure greater durability of polyester-based paint, as it forms a protective layer over the entire surface of the vehicle.
In addition, the clearcoat also contributes to the beauty of the car, enhancing its aesthetics by adding shine to the colors.
In general, automotive clearcoat is used to:
- Form a weather-resistant layer for the applied polyester base coat;
- Accentuate the overall shine or shine of specific areas of the paint;
- Enhance paints, colors, and textures, both in gloss and matte finishes;
- Highlight the aesthetic points of the vehicle.
Automotive clearcoat is used on the paintwork of a wide variety of vehicles and provides incredible results.
You can find different types of clearcoats on the market, such as low-solids, medium-solids, and high-solids. Ultimately, they vary based on the amount of solids and drying speed.
Generally, high-solids automotive clearcoats offer the best value on the market, even though they initially appear more expensive. Medium-solids clearcoats also offer quality depending on the application.
To ensure a good result, it is essential to prepare the vehicle using the correct procedures, thus avoiding some of the problems that can occur when the surface or the product is not prepared correctly.
To do this, after applying the polyester base coat, use the TH710 Degreasing Solution to clean the part that will receive the clearcoat.
Prepare the clearcoat strictly following the manufacturer’s instructions and apply it, also following the product’s technical data sheet.
If you are polishing the part, wait for the product to dry completely.
The dilution of the clearcoat depends on the manufacturer. Therefore, you should check the instructions for the product you purchased.
This is an example of Skylack’s two-part 10,000 PU clearcoat: for 5 parts by volume, add 1 part by volume of Hardener 100 or Hardener 110. Consume the mixture within 4 hours.

It’s not just the safety, comfort, and technological features that evolve each year in vehicles. When choosing a new or used car, there are always some factors that can influence the driver’s decision, such as range, price, and color.
In the automotive sector, the role of automotive paint is both protective and aesthetic. Depending on the car, special colors—such as blue and yellow—or even two-tone options are launched. However, most stick to the basics.
Many factors can contribute to damage to automotive paint, including:
- Bird droppings, as they are corrosive;
- Acid rain, which can attack vehicle paint due to the presence of gases and particles (such as nitrogen and sulfur) in the atmosphere;
- Hail, because ice chips can crack car paint;
- Sea air;
- Paint splashes;
- Asphalt residue;
- Non-neutral soap in car washes;
- Fuels.
To perform automotive refinishing, it’s necessary to follow some fundamental steps, such as:
- Identify the area to be repaired;
- Smooth the body with 80/160 grit sandpaper.
- Clean the surface with TH710 Degreasing Solution.
- Apply K7 Polyester Filler.
- Sand the K7 Polyester Filler with 160 grit sandpaper.
- Refine with 320 grit sandpaper to apply the primer.
- Apply Wash Primer with 550 phosphatizing Primer (if necessary).
- Apply Skylack Primer. Apply Sanding Control 038 Sand the primer with 320/400 grit sandpaper.
- Refine the primer with 600/800 grit sandpaper.
- Clean the surface with TH710 Degreasing Solution.
- Apply SKYDUR Polyester Basecoat.
- Then apply Skylack Clearcoat.
- Sand to polish with 2000 grit sandpaper.
- Polish with Skylack Polishing Filler or polisher SKYFINISH .
- Refine the polish with SKYFINISH Polish and a foam buff.
- Finish with SKYFINISH Gloss and a microfiber cloth.
It’s important to remember that all these steps are performed by a professional, as this will give a much better result.
Automotive primer is used as a preparatory coat for painting vehicle parts. It generally acts as a primer that fixes the material to the surface. This way, when the part is repainted, the paint won’t peel off and the job will be flawless.
The purpose of automotive primer is directly related to surface preparation, with the goal of providing better adhesion and greater filling of the automotive part to be repainted.
Therefore, the repainting process is much easier and the repaint’s durability is much longer.
The dilution of automotive primer may vary depending on the manufacturer. Be very careful and follow the indicated measurements!
To know how to prepare the primer, you must check the ratio indicated on the container or in the product data sheet and then dilute the product.
To apply the automotive primer, it is essential to first prepare the surface.
Then, allow the product to become even before diluting it, dilute it, apply it with a suitable spray gun, and wait for it to dry.
To choose the best automotive primer, consider your needs and the cost-effectiveness of each brand.

Polyester paint is a one-component polyester resin-based paint used for a two-coat system (paint and varnish).
Generally, these paints are fast-drying and have high hiding power, reproducing metallic, pearlescent, and smooth factory-original colors.
This material is suitable for automotive refinishing and general refinishing.
To thin polyester paint, it is necessary to use a suitable thinner, recommended by the manufacturer on the paint container or in its technical data sheet.
To ensure a good result, it is essential to prepare the vehicle using the correct procedures, avoiding poor adhesion of the product.
To do this, clean the surface thoroughly, properly prepare the paint, and apply it with a suitable spray gun, at the distance recommended by the manufacturer in its Technical Data Sheet.
